William Joseph Shields
William Joseph Shields was born March 10, 1888 (Dublin, Ireland).
Barry Fitzgerald was engaged in the banking business, but always wanted to try himself as an actor. And very soon he finds himself in the company of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, where he plays in the play by Sean O’Casey “Juno and the Peacock.” In 1930, this work will be adapted for the screen and delivered by Alfred Hitchcock, as with Fitzgerald in the stellar lineup. Debuting in Hollywood in the film adaptation of John Ford’s another O’Casey play “Plough and the Stars” (1936), Fitzgerald will forever remain in America’s most popular Irish character actor. He often played sentimental, whimsical characters, and was a favorite of Ford, who shot him several times, including the famous film “The Quiet Man” (1952). Miniature Fitzgerald frequently appeared on the screen with such stalwart actors like John Wayne, to emphasize the courage of his heroes. Fitzgerald striking work can be called the film “Bringing Up Baby” (1938), where he plays a drunk who sees sitting in front of a leopard, and the role of the old priest in the film “Going My Way” (1944), which earned him the “Oscar” as Best Supporting Actor plan. For this role, he was presented in two categories – and even as best actor, the first and only time in the history of the “Oscar” as soon Academy changed the rules for the appointment of nominees.
Died in 1962 (Dublin, Ireland).
